MoonWater Mists: What They Are and How to Use Them

What is moon water?

Moon water is just what it sounds like: water that has been energetically “charged” by sitting in the light of the moon. With the stress and anxiety that most people face today, reconnecting with the moon in this way can be a beautiful way to slow down.

The origins of moon water go way back to many different cultures around the world. In some Indian cultures, bathing in moon water is believed to help one absorb the prana (or energy) of the moon. Wiccans and other pagan practitioners use charged water to cleanse their crystals and tools before a spell or ritual. Today, many people use moon water for their spiritual and wellbeing practices, and one of the most common ways it is used is for manifestation.

What is a MoonWater Mist?

Simply put, it's a spray made using distilled water charged by the light of the Full Moon, alcohol to help disperse the spray, and a blend of essential oils.

I've been making these for 4 years now, and I spent a year before that trialling the best blends – not only for the scents that work together best, but for the oils that had the desired effect on the whole mind, body and spirit.

Why use essential oils?

Essential oils have a myriad of uses. Not only do they smell amazing, which can help to lift your mood, but each has its own character that many people find supports relaxation, focus or rest.

The MoonWater Mist range

The mists can be used as a mood booster, to cleanse ritual tools, to help you unwind before sleep and even to celebrate the Sabbats (the eight seasonal festivals of the pagan year) and Esbats (full moon rituals).

Sabbat mists

  • Ostara Solace – Ostara is one of the eight Sabbats and celebrates the spring equinox. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, who represented spring and new beginnings.
  • Essence of Lammas – Lammas, or Lughnasadh, is one of the eight Sabbats, celebrated on 1st August, about halfway between Litha (the Summer Solstice) and Mabon (the Autumn Equinox).
  • Yule Solace – Yule is one of the eight Sabbats. It centres on the Winter Solstice, around 21st December – the shortest day of the year – and is traditionally celebrated over twelve days.

Everyday mists

  • Cleanse My Soul – This was the very first blend I created, a combination of my mother’s favourite scents. It's designed as a mind, body and spirit reset – a gentle way to start afresh.
  • Forest Bathing – Nature therapy, sometimes called forest therapy, forest bathing or grounding, is a practice that uses time in nature to support wellbeing. This blend brings a little of that feeling indoors when you can't get out into nature.
  • Sage – The perfect choice when you don't want to, or can't, burn sage but still want to cleanse your space. Ideal for no-smoking places like hotels.
  • Luna – Luna is the goddess and divine embodiment of the Moon. This calming blend is made for those who struggle to switch off at bedtime.

Retrogr'aid mists

At times throughout the year, the planets in our solar system appear to move backwards through the sky. This is called a planetary retrograde, and many believe these times bring shifts in the energy around us. The Retrogr'aid blends are made to support you through them.

  • Mercury Retrogr'aid – Mercury retrograde happens 3 or 4 times a year and lasts about 3 weeks. It's often associated with feeling either drained and lethargic, or restless, scattered and unfocused. This blend is designed to help you feel relaxed and calm.
  • Mars Retrogr'aid – Mars retrograde happens every 26 months and lasts 2 to 2.5 months. It's often associated with feeling sluggish and unmotivated. This uplifting blend is designed to help you feel energised and ready to take things on.

Mists for pets

  • Cerberus – Named after the Hound of Hades, a calming mist created for your furry friends, with lavender.
  • Anubis – Named after the Egyptian god, another calming mist for your furry friends, lavender free.

Pet safety: some essential oils can be harmful to animals, especially cats. Never spray the mists directly onto your pet, their bedding or their food. Use them in a well-ventilated room your pet can leave if they want to, and check with your vet before use, particularly if your pet is young, elderly, pregnant or has health conditions.

How to use the mists

  1. Find yourself a quiet, comfortable space.
  2. Shake the bottle well to blend the ingredients – the liquid should look cloudy.
  3. Spray around the space, onto your pillow, or onto a cotton cloth to carry with you.
  4. Breathe in deeply through your nose, focusing on the scent.
  5. Close your eyes if you wish, and relax.

Safety: for external use only. Do not drink. Avoid spraying near eyes, face, flames or naked lights, as the mists contain alcohol. Patch test before any contact with skin, keep out of reach of children, and seek advice from your doctor before use if you are pregnant or have a medical condition.
